"What Boat Owners Need to Know! - E-10 (Ethanol) in Gasoline and Where to Find Non-Blended Gas."
- Oregon State Marine Board -
VIEW REPORT:  http://www.oregon.gov/OSMB/news/E10.shtml

Located at OREGON.GOV website, the Oregon State Marine Board issues E10 ethanol warning, precautions and information for boat owners. Also includes list of locations where marine engine owners can purchase non-ethanol gasoline.

Excerpt:
"...For the marine industry, though, ethanol raises some issues.  Ethanol is a solvent that doesn’t mix well with the additive MTBE fuel in some tanks.  Combining MTBE with E10 scours fuel systems, overburdening filters, breaks down fiberglass fuel tanks and rapidly absorbs water from atmospheric humidity.  The result is a brief shelf life.  Adopting E10 into fuel is changing the way gasoline-powered boats are maintained, serviced, used and even constructed..."

"Marine Manufacturer Fuel Recommendations" - Washington DC-
Prepared for the RFA (Renewal Fuels Association) by Hermann & Associates, 2003.
Lists detailed recommendations for most marine engine and outboard companies, including warnings to avoid ethanol fuels.

Excerpts:
  • Bombardier engines, "Never use fuel containing alcohol, methanol, or similar products including naptha".
  • Mercury 4 stroke engines, "We do not recommend the use of gasoline which contains alcohol because of the possible adverse effect...corrosion...deterioration...wear and damage...starting and operating difficulties...vapor lock..."
  • Pleasurecraft, similar to Mercury, PCM marine engines comments describe problems encountered when ethanol fuel is used.
(Note: Mercury has since approved use of E10 in current engines sold).

* Note: Fuel-Testers included this older 1995 EPA bulletin written to boat owners, to demonstrate that published precautions and concern when using E10 in marine engines dates back many years

EPA bulletin includes, "...some manufacturers are concerned that hoses in fuel systems produced before 1980 might be more prone to damage from alcohol-oxygenated fuels...."

By Dennis Simanaitis, August 2006.

Excerpt:
"Ethanol has less energy than gasoline (about 68 percent of gasoline’s calorific value, according to my Internal Combustion Engine Handbook).". .."For instance, suppose your nice frugal car gets 30.0 mpg on gasoline. You’ll likely not notice the difference at 29.1 mpg on E10. But what about E85’s 21.9 mpg?...".

U.S. PETROLEUM IMPORTS

vernment.

Visit EIA (Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Government) for extensive and shocking statistics, which support the severe dependency the United States has on foreign oil imports to meet our daily gasoline/energy use.

- In 2008, the United States imported 70% of our petroleum oil, up from about 10-20% in the 1970's.

- The U.S. imports almost 10 MILLION barrels per DAY of oil...

- In May 2008, over 1.5 million barrels/day were imported from Saudia Arabia...

- Included in the Top15 list of countires the U.S. imports from are:
Saudia Arabia, Nigeria, Iraq, Algeria, Kuwait, Libya, Russia, Venezuela...

ACE (American Coalition of Ethanol) UPDATES

March 2009:  "Ace Coalition Formally Petitions EPA to Allow up to 15 Percent Ethanol in Gasoline"
http://www.ethanol.org/pdf/contentmgmt/EPA_E15_waiver_3_6_09.pdf    and http://www.ethanol.org/news/index.php?newsid=81

Fuel-Testers Comments:  Increasing E10 to E15 with 15% ethanol simply makes no sense. ACE should return to their original plan to increase E85 use in specially designed flex fuel vehicles. We hope the EPA realizes consumers require gas choice at the pump, which includes non-ethanol gas when recommended by their engine manufacturer. READ MORE.
